What I Wish I Knew

Options: Back
Dear HHS Crew Parents,

This is something we created a few years ago with the novice parent in mind.  Just a few things that we wish somebody had told us before our first regattas.  We hope it can also provide some good reminders for varsity parents.  It continues to evolve so please email us with anything you feel should be added.

"How do I find my people?"

The club has what can best be described as a two horse trailer that has been modified to carry hospitality items.  It is red with our logo on each side.  Club Volunteers set up the trailer before the regatta.  We set up a few small tarps and put down a ground liner so our rowers have a clean dry place to wait or rest between races.  We also have two HHS Crew flags that will help you find us.  It will be very dark when you arrive in the morning so everyone should bring their own flash light.  The boats will be parked in one location and the hospitality trailer will be in another.  You will want to find the hospitality trailer.  All regattas require you to park quite far from the venue.  You may want to bring a wagon to carry multiple things or some of the heavier items like water.

"What if I need to contact a club member?"

We highly recommend that you either print the team roster (from our website) or bookmark www.hhsrowingclub.com on your smart phone.  You will need to sign in with your user name and password in order to see the roster.
Also, be sure to join the clubs Remind group.  Members are able to chat with all other members through the Remind smart phone application.

"I have never met the coaches, I want to introduce myself."

The coaches are all over the place during the regatta.  You can find them at the boat trailer, the docks, and at the Parent Tent in between heats.  Please introduce yourself and tell them who your rower is.  They want to hear from you as much as you want to know what they are up to.

"I bet the docks are a great place to get some close up photos!"

It can be, but it's best to stay clear of the docks, when they are loading and unloading.  There are excited rowers carrying boats, with rigors sticking out.   Stay alert, we don't want anyone to be hit in the face or head.

"What are some things I should bring to a regatta?"
  • Cash (not just for parking, most regattas have food and merchandise vendors)
  • Chair
  • Sunglasses
  • Book/puzzles, tablet
  • Lip balm
  • Sunscreen
  • Mosquito protection
  • Camera with telephoto lens
  • Layers (HHS Crew sweatshirt/shirt, wind breaker)
  • Comfortable shoes (lots of walking)
  • Hair tie
  • Small cooler for your snacks and drinks
  • Picnic blanket/large beach towel
  • Flashlight
  • Binoculars
  • Book
  • Bicycle for some regattas like Halloween Regatta
  • Loud Yelling Voice "Go Hillsborough!!!!!!"
"How do I know what time the races are?
What the coarse looks like?
How to look up race results?"

Regatta Central is a website that you will want to bookmark.  All of our regattas are listed there.  Just scroll down and click on the regatta you want.  It shows every detail you could ever imagine.  You can also go back the day after the race and check the results!

"I am starving....when can I eat?"

For most regattas, we bring the Hospitality trailer and do a breakfast and lunch!
Make sure you have a Signup Genius account so you can volunteer to bring something so everyone can chow down.  Food is available pretty much the whole time.

"My kids last race is at 11:30, can we leave?"

Rowers are not permitted to leave the regatta until the event is over and Coach Tate has dismissed the team.  All the boats need to be loaded on the trailer and hospitality area cleaned.

One last thing....Please read

Volunteer Hours.  Our club depends on parent volunteers.  For each season, Fall and Spring, each family must donate 15 hours of their time, and/or bring needed items to regattas, or they can elect to "buy" out their obligation at a cost of $15 per hour.  Please see the volunteer page for more information.  If you bring needed items to a regatta, $15 of items listed on the sign up genius equates to 1 hour of service.  Instructions on how to post the time you have volunteered or items you have donated can be found here.  We will always post a Signup Genius link for each regatta.

Wishing all of our crew safe, strong and FAST races!

GO BIG RED!
